About 40 minutes north of Cusco, we will arrive at the archaeological center of Chinchero, a living town that still preserves the original Inca layout and is located in an important agricultural area. The colonial-era church and tower were built upon Inca temple foundations. Local artisans offer handmade textiles using ancestral techniques. These terraces create microclimates and were used for experimental purposes such as plant domestication, acclimatization, hybridization, and other agricultural studies.

Next, we will visit the Maras salt mines, which have been in use since pre-Inca times. There are over 3,000 shallow salt pools, owned by approximately 380 families. The saltwater comes from natural springs that filter from the mountain known as Qoripukiu (Golden Spring). After this visit, we will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch in Urubamba, prepared with fresh ingredients from the Sacred Valley. After lunch, we will continue our journey by bus for 30 minutes to the archaeological center of Ollantaytambo, a site that was continuously occupied over time. During the Inca era, Ollantaytambo served as a multifunctional town, acting as an administrative, military, social, and economic center, as well as a checkpoint for access to different ecological zones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to visit Machu Picchu?

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season, from May to October. During these months the skies are clearer, offering better visibility of the citadel and surrounding mountains. June and July are the most popular months, so booking in advance is strongly recommended.

Is the Cusco City Tour a physically demanding walk?

The City Tour involves moderate walking across uneven stone surfaces at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters above sea level. Sites like Sacsayhuaman require uphill walking. It is not a strenuous hike, but we recommend comfortable footwear and taking it slow to allow your body to acclimatize upon arrival.

How long is the Rainbow Mountain hike and can it be done on horseback or ATV?

The round-trip hike to Vinicunca covers approximately 7 kilometers, with 2 hours going up and 2 hours returning, reaching 5,020 meters above sea level. For those who prefer not to walk, horses are available locally for hire along the trail. ATV tours to Rainbow Mountain are also offered as a separate adventure option through the agency.

What should I do if I experience altitude sickness at Machu Picchu or Rainbow Mountain?

Altitude sickness (soroche) is common above 3,000 meters. If you feel dizzy, have a headache, or feel short of breath, stop and rest immediately, drink plenty of water, and avoid sudden physical effort. Chewing coca leaves or drinking coca tea is a traditional local remedy that helps many travelers. In severe cases, descending to a lower altitude is the most effective solution. Always inform your guide immediately if you feel unwell.

How many days in advance should I book to secure my Machu Picchu entrance ticket?

Machu Picchu has a daily visitor limit and tickets sell out weeks or even months in advance, especially during the high season (June–August). We strongly recommend booking at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead. For travel during holidays or Inti Raymi season, booking 2 to 3 months in advance is advisable.

What is the weather like at Rainbow Mountain?

Vinicunca's weather is highly unpredictable due to its extreme altitude. Mornings are usually cold and clear, ideal for photography, while afternoons can bring clouds, wind, or rain. Temperatures can drop below 0°C. Layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, a hat, and gloves are essential regardless of the time of year.

Why do the colors of Rainbow Mountain look so vivid?

The striking multicolored stripes of Vinicunca are a natural geological phenomenon caused by the presence of different minerals in the rock layers: iron sulfide produces the golden tones, red iron oxide creates the reddish hues, and chlorite gives the greenish shades, among others. The colors are most vivid after rain, when the minerals are more saturated.

Is it necessary to acclimatize in Cusco before visiting Machu Picchu or Rainbow Mountain?

Yes, acclimatization is highly recommended. The itinerary is designed with this in mind: Day 1 is dedicated to the City Tour at Cusco's altitude (3,400 m), giving your body time to adjust before the more demanding excursions on Days 2, 3, and 4. Avoid alcohol, eat light meals, stay hydrated, and rest well your first night in Cusco.

What are the main highlights inside the Machu Picchu citadel?

During the guided tour inside the citadel you will visit the Lookout (the iconic viewpoint seen in most photos), the Temple of the Three Windows, the Intihuatana (a ceremonial sun dial), the Main Square, and the residential and agricultural terraces. The guide will explain the astronomical, spiritual, and architectural significance of each structure.

What makes the Chinchero and Ollantaytambo stops in the Sacred Valley worth visiting?

Chinchero is a living Andean village that still preserves its original Inca layout, where local artisans demonstrate traditional textile weaving techniques passed down through generations. Ollantaytambo, on the other hand, is one of the best-preserved Inca military and administrative centers, featuring massive stone terraces that served both agricultural and defensive purposes. Together, they offer a rich contrast between living culture and ancient architecture.
