Introduction

One of the most striking rock formations in the world is located in Cusco: Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca. Located in the Andes mountain range, in the district of Pitumarca, approximately 100 km south of the city of Cusco, it is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Cusco, second only to Machu Picchu.

Rainbow Mountain offers a moderately difficult hike, so it is essential to acclimatize to the altitude beforehand. For those who prefer a less physically demanding alternative, it is also possible to cover the route on horseback or by quad bike, options preferred by other visitors.

What makes Rainbow Mountain unique is its diversity of natural tones: red, green, white, yellow, and purple, resulting from the different minerals present in the soil. For this reason, many visitors also know it as Mountain of Colors. In addition, from its summit it is possible to admire other nearby attractions, such as the Red Valley and the Ausangate snow-capped peak, making this place a natural viewpoint of unique landscapes.

Detailed Itinerary: Rainbow Mountain Tour 2026

Day 1: Rainbow Mountain Tour

The Rainbow Mountain tour begins very early, between 4:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., when our tourist transport unit and guide will be waiting for you at your hotel's door to start the adventure.

From Cusco, we will head to the picturesque town of Cusipata, where we will stop to enjoy a hearty breakfast. Our arrival in Cusipata will be at approximately 7:00 a.m., and you'll also have the opportunity to purchase snacks for the road. After breakfast, we will continue for about 40 more minutes by vehicle until reaching the starting point of the hike.

Once at the starting point, our guide will provide the necessary instructions before beginning the ascent. It's important to keep in mind that Rainbow Mountain is located at 5,020 meters above sea level (16,470 ft), so it is recommended to take preventive measures against altitude sickness. After approximately 2 hours of hiking, you will reach the summit, where you can admire the impressive natural colors of Vinicunca, rest, and take photos of the site.

After enjoying Rainbow Mountain, we will begin the descent back to our vehicle. Before returning to the city of Cusco, we will make a stop to enjoy lunch, then continue the return trip, arriving at approximately 5:00 p.m.
